One of the better books I have read on the topic, I also recommend other books by the same author.

This is the second book by this author that I have purchased and once again I was not disappointed. Jim weaves basic survival tactics in with advanced long term sustainable survivable techniques. This book covers everything from growing your own garden to basic first aid. I read through this book in one sitting. The book itself flows very well and shares some very logical tips for taking care of your family in a wide range of emergency situations of both the natural and man caused type. Jim is a survival expert but he is not a lunatic or nut job. He is reasonable some of his suggestions are as simple as keeping a change of clothes and a toothbrush at the office in case of emergency but he also provides advise on at home survival kits. The end of the book contains several checklists that i found very useful. Overall this is a great book with valuable information in a format that is easy to understand and fun to read.

Almost everybody every where is coming out with some sort of prepper book. I have read many and this one I believe is great. Yes there are plenty of other great books, but this one is an easy read, Mr. Cobb leaves the political nonsense out of it. He also gets right to the point, explaining why its important to prep and many different options for your specific needs. Worth the buy and read, probable even two or more reads.

This is a good read that explores many aspects of common sense prepping without getting into much detail. Ideally, I’d give it 3.5 stars but I don’t feel like rounding up. This book doesn’t go into specifics enough for my taste and having read other books like this I already felt I had a grasp of the basic preparedness philosophy it was trying to lay out. I think it’s a good book for beginners and despite my criticism I did dog ear half a dozen pages to read again later. Certainly not bad but not great either.

Between this book and Jim’s newer book Prepper’s Long-Term Survival Guide: Food, Shelter, Security, Off-the-Grid Power and More Life-Saving Strategies for Self-Sufficient Living, you will have the knowledge to do it for both long term and short term disasters. Part of becoming better prepared is understanding the how tos and the language used. These books do that well. Once you have read them and assessed where you are right now, there are sources for you to learn more about how to strengthen your weak areas.
Shorter term disasters happen everyday from a car accident that puts your transportation out of commission to job loss, other income losses, natural and weather related power outages to disasters like hurricane Katrina. Being ready for them really reduces some of the stress associated with them and they become ‘inconveniences’ instead of ‘disasters’.
Oh and don’t loan it out, you won’t get it back. 😉

I believe any person who cares about his family and friends needs to read the “prep” book. While some say it is for “beginners,” I say “so what!”… most people haven’t even begun to prepare for ANY kind of emergency situation. What happens in our country if there is a tornado, hurricane, flood, wild fires, drought, riots, terror attack, food shortage, water shortage, no electricity, solar flare, and so on? What are some of the primary things you “need” to survive immediately and on an ongoing basis? Many have our American mentality that says we are “safe and secure” and “nothing bad will happen to us” and “somebody out there will take care of us.” Wake up! It is not irrational to prepare – especially for your loved ones. This book was very insightful and I highly recommend it. Be responsible. Get ready.

Awesome book.

This book is suprisingly easy to read. It is well written with humour and stresses the importance of applying the contents to your own specifications. Its based mainly on things that happen in America which is why it gets 4 stars. Would recommend

Nice, light book. Covers the topics of why prep, mind set, kits, bug out vs. shelter in place, food storage, foraging, water, health, miscellaneous gear, security, kids, pets, elderly, skills, survival communications, YOYO time, survivalism in pop culture, and the survival library. This is a long and informative book.

Basic knowledge, easy to understand and easy to try

The editing in this book leaves something to be desired. I have found in several spots throughout the book where phrases are repeated excessivly- sometimes literally one scentence repeated twice back to back. Other than that, the content is interesting and has got me thinking beyond my “small time prepper” mentality. This book is a good book for people like myself, amateur/aspiring preppers. This is an easy read and a very good place to start in the world of preparedness.
