As an attorney that has worked in bankruptcy, I think this is a great book for people to read whether you have an overt interests in finances. Jim Cobb describes and analyze historical financial situations in a way that makes it easy for anyone to understand. Mr. Cobb is also able to make seem interesting for those that are not about to read about finances outside of work (guilty). His use of language keeps you engaged on a topic that would be dry for most people.

I found a lot of skills to utilize in my own life and advise to clients that are trying to get a better hold on their finances or build up their finances after bankruptcy. Mr. Cobb is knowledgeable and practical without being preachy in his skills. He is straightforward in the facts and strategies. It is like a survival for finances after everything is decimated. His advice is practical and worth every penny. Take it with a grain of salt in the sense is that you can bring the horse to water but you can’t make the horse drink. It is up to you to utilize the skills and strategies that Mr. Cobb lays out. Put yourself on firm financial footing. Even utilizing some of this will put you at a better place financially. So many people rely on credit cards these days, this book is a good way to put your eggs in a different basket.

This book was mostly too basic to be much use. It is only about 150 pages, and I was disappointed by the lack of in-depth information.

The first part of the book gives a history of financial collapse and talks about what could happen in the future. Most people buying a book like this are probably already very aware of these possibilities.

Then the book moves on to a chapter on Debt Reduction and gives some extremely basic advice on financial management. You’d be much better off buying a Dave Ramsey book and following that plan. It will give you a LOT more information.

He includes a long chapter on currency, but I am at a loss after reading it as to why I’d want to bother with any foreign currencies. The author says himself that it is hard to predict which currencies might be used if the dollar fails – and I honestly don’t see people accepting any paper money in a serious financial collapse situation. I thought this chapter was confusing and did not make a whole lot of sense.

So, basically, the first 86 pages of the book were a waste of time, in my opinion. Then I got to the chapters that were actually helpful [barter and trade goods, bartering skills instead of stuff, safeguarding valuables, & investing in self sufficiency]. Those chapters were very helpful and well written. I appreciated the information [and they are why this review is getting 3 stars instead of 1or 2]. But when you consider that the entire book is only about 150 pages long – not getting anything helpful till page 87 was a bit frustrating. I was left with the feeling that I would have been better off to google a couple of articles on this topic online for free than to pay the purchase price for this book.

This is a great book for people who are preparing to live a self-sufficient life style. It has valuable information you need to be self sufficient financially when the financial market collapses. It doesn’t suggest the traditional methods for financial security, but some untraditional methods. I can understand some of the methods, collecting coins, gems, gold and silver. Burying your money, might be too untraditional for me. Bartering items you have and services you can provide are other ways to because financially independent. Some of those things can be done even if we are not in a financial collapse. Items that you should have on hand to barter with can expire, so you would have to method to rotate your supplies.
This book was easy to read, it was written in a very casual way. It was like he was talking with you face to face, one-on-one, a friend giving you advice. This book is more than just a financial strategy for the when the next financial collapse happens. It helps you plan out how to live a self-sufficient life from putting meat on your table to buying precious metals and gems.

I bought this book for my dad- I plan to give it to him for Father’s Day in a few months. My dad loves financial planning, and he is also incredibly interested in the future of the States if there is a big economic collapse or technological difficulty (his favorite show is Revolution). I thought this would be great to combine his two great hobbies! The book starts with some really interesting, if not slightly intimidating, information about previous economic collapses. The book tells you what kind of things would be good to trade in this future and gives you idea for bartering: precious metals, consumables, and my favorite suggestion- vices. It also mentions useful skills you can barter for- sadly, I don’t have too many skills the book finds useful, except for cooking and candle-making. It has a lot of really fun information about this possible future and ways we will adjust. It also has good tips for living in our current state- things like ways to reduce credit card debt and ways to reduce costs of food. Occasionally, this book can get slightly condescending, but it is overall a fun and unique book. I know my dad is going to love it- I wish June would hurry up and get here so I can give it to him!
