The fact is our awareness is at an all-time low. We drive to work mindlessly. We assume that no one has any reason to bother us. And our awareness is numb. And because our awareness muscle is weak…we become vulnerable. Patrick McNamara’s book “Sentinel: Become the Agent in Charge of Your Own Protection Detail” should be required reading for every human being on the planet. The point of the book is not to live in “paranoia”. The point of the book is to live a more self-aware and situationally aware life.
The fact is we have become so attached to our phones we live life at a 45 degree angle, looking down. As Pat Mac says, “we have become so connected we actually have become disconnected”. It’s true we are disconnected from our surroundings, our world, and the people that live in it. And because we live in our own world we actually put ourselves in precarious situations daily.
This book speaks to everyday practical things that you can do to build your own self and situational awareness. Whether you are going to the office, the grocery store, taking care of your vehicle, or taking care of your body. This book addresses every area. And for those of you who are looking to improve your self-awareness when it comes to firearms, Pat Mac addresses that too. Sentinel is a book for all people for all time. If you want to improve yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually this book addresses it. It’s time to move out of zombie land and get more aware! Get it! Read it! Act on it!

Sentinel:Become the agent in charge of your own protection detail is written by a man who has been there and does that . The author has 22 years of Special Operations experience in hostile environments. This is a short (128 pgs.) but information packed book. Whether you are a Security professional in charge of someones safety or a family man responsible for the well being of your wife and children , you will benefit from the information in this book. Stressed throughout is proper preparation and situational awareness. Know where you are, who is around you and what are the conditions. From self defense, first aid, firearms,, bug out bags and go bags there is helpful tips to increase your chance of survival when faced with the unexpected. There is a passage on pg. 52 that sums up the authors approach to protecting yourself and others: ” Basically every step we take toward having complete power over are lives is one step away from being a victim, where we have none.” Following the advice in this book by Patrick McNamara will give you more power and lessen your chance of becoming a victim. Recommended.

For the uninitiated, it’s a great starting point. Covers the basics and provides detailed “how tos” for them. I particularly liked the way he covered moving with your kids through a parking lot to an amusement park and the suggestions regarding how to turn your kids into “team assets” as opposed to liabilities.
The author’s personal experience and training background shows through in his approach to many situations. I consider the book a good investment… both in money and time. It’s a good read that provides a lot of good ideas AND procedures. If you are a world-class expert on personal protection and convoy security, you might want to pass on this one. But if you are a “head of family” who wants access to a good methodology you can follow to allow you to do your best protecting those you love, you’ll want to buy and read this book.

This isn’t your cub-scout level preparedness book. It’s simple enough for anyone to follow on any budget and in any situation. But Pat writes in an interesting way with enough common-sense detail to drive and motivate you to be accountable for the safety of your family, friends and yourself, along with the knowledge of how…including a lot of things you probably haven’t thought of or possibly forgot. Whether you’re first looking into your own security or think you’re already a bad-ass, this book is well worth the cost and time to read it.

As one who has published widely on targeted attacks and protection, I was very keen to get McNamara’s personal insight on the topic. I was not disappointed. McNamara takes an “all threats” perspective providing a lot of excellent material allowing for the average person to enhance their overall security. Even for those with military/law enforcement/EP backgrounds, there is much that can be learned. I can tell you that my copy has many highlighted sections and that I will be incorporating a fair amount of his training techniques into my personal training – both combat fitness and tactical – regimen. The book is a relatively quick read, although I can imagine many going back to parts time and again. The only reason for not giving it the full 5 stars was some of the editing (not to be a hypocrite as I have had my own issues on this) needed some work.
