If you just want a shopping list of the latest greatest fad gizmos to weigh down your backpack… this book is not that list. However, if you appreciate having thoughtful advice from a seasoned outdoorsman on features and capabilities of different types of gear that you might wish to be aware of as you seek to optimize your own wilderness / outdoor kit… then this book does a great job.
After a fair number of years doing backpack camping in the Appalachians, I was pretty satisfied with my backpacking loadout. I knew of Mr. Caudill and had enjoyed his first book Extreme Wilderness Survival. But I was satisfied with my gear and didn’t feel the need to read a book on gear. Then I took a wilderness Tracking class from Mr. Caudill and I changed my mind. Craig Caudill is the real deal. He is a humble person and very capable outdoorsman… a great teacher with a wealth of knowledge gathered from years of personal wilderness experience. So, I changed my mind and bought Caudill’s book Ultimate Wilderness Gear. I wanted to know this thoughtful man’s opinions on the topic. I expected that I and my loadout would be the better for it and I was not disappointed.
The book is well written and an interesting read. It presents its topics on gear concentrating on the essential gear types appropriate for safe, effective and fun outdoor experiences. The book is sprinkled with personal wilderness stories and interesting historical tidbits that make it feel like you are having an enjoyable educational discussion with a respected friend.
The material is presented in an enjoyable, attractive and well organized format. Its all in here… the why you want this feature and do not need this other feature… what to look for and what to watch out for. And through all of the informative content is the why told by someone that knows what he is talking about.
Great book and well worth the read.

Many times books are filled with a few nuggets and a lot of fluff, but not this one. This book is the best book on outdoor gear that I have read. You can tell that Craig put a lot of work into this book. I love it when an author has tons of experience and knowledge when they cover a topic and it’s no secret that Craig has spent a lot of time in the woods and has tested tons of gear. I would recommend this book for both beginners and experienced hikers, campers, survivalists, hunters, or any outdoor enthusiast.

This is the 3rd book of Craig Caudill’s that I have had the pleasure to read It like the other two is magnificent. In the past 10 years, I have read a very large number of books on doing things in the great outdoors and this book (along with the other 2) is one of the very few that have been worthy of getting a terrestrial copy of.
This book is broadly about gear that you use in camping and survival away from population centers, but it’s not an infomercial for any specific brands. This book is like sitting down and talking with a knowledgeable guy who tells you stories about his experiences. He might tell you about an item that he has used or tested, but in the next sentence, he will tell you about another piece of gear that he’s had for 20 years and is real partial to. This is about gear you need and how to use it, plus a lot more useful information.
I’ve been going to the woods for 45 years or so and I’ve seen and done a lot of things out there, but with this book as with his others, I knew a hell of a lot more when I closed the book than when I opened it.
The flow of his books is as good as Stephen King and his facts and sources are as complete as Mark Levin’s. I really feel that God put this man on Earth to teach and write books.
Am I a fan? Why, Yes, yes I am.
If you want to enjoy the outdoors as a beginner, read this book. If you are like me and have been going for a long time and are open to some better, easier ways to enjoy things. Read the book

When I received the book I could not wait to read it. It has exceeded my expectations! The focus of the book is on HOW, what criteria to use, to select gear for YOU. It is NOT a ‘ XYZ is the best sleep system in all situations so just go buy it.’ kind of book. The section on survival/ explorer gear taken by men and women in earlier times I really enjoyed. It has made me want to find further information on gear and techniques used by travelers in different epochs of world history. Maybe Craig Caudill will write one!
I highly recommend Ultimate Wilderness Gear!

This book has something for everyone, regardless of their skill level. Not only will it aid you in resolving your gear addiction, but it will educate you on what to look for and what is truly important when it comes to selecting equipment for the outdoors. The practical takeaways are too numerous to list; you’ll be able to take your personal kit and make it better in a single reading and use it again and again as a resource when shopping. The author’s personal sidebars with his own experiences just add to it that nice personal touch that most books in the “survival” world sorely lack. Yes, this guy actually gets out and does the stuff! The color and vibrant photographs with his family involved are AWESOME as well.

This was a thorough guide to hiking/camping/survival equipment – what you need and why, some pros and cons of different options, and even some specific brand recommendations. The author knows his material and provides plenty of real-life examples to make points. This book could really help people before they start spending money on gear.

Covers a wide range of subjects on how to gear up for wilderness experiences. Anything from backpacks, axes, food, clothing, etc. Great gear recommendations that tell you what he likes personally likes and why, but other suitable or unsuitable products too. Could have left out the chapters on firearms and hunting. Not in depth enough to be of use. Those require books of their own. Other chapters give you a lot of value for the condensed amount of information.
